His language reflects a mechanistic and emergentist worldview, where the brain is seen as a complex computer, and consciousness is framed as a mysterious output—an epiphenomenon that somehow arises from sufficient neuronal complexity.This vision, while bold, also reveals the conceptual limitations of contemporary materialist neuroscience. Musk’s framing of the brain as wiring, memory as data, and identity as information stored in synapses belongs to a long lineage of Enlightenment and Cartesian metaphors. These metaphors assume that the universe, and by extension consciousness, is a machine: a system of parts whose behavior can be predicted, replicated, and enhanced by improving its components and interfaces.But what if consciousness is not a machine output?
